A NEW CLASS OF HIGH PERFORMANCE INDUSTRIAL ANTIOXIDANTS

Engine lubricant formulation change in response  to meet the changing customer and industry needs and specifications.  Engine lubricants consists mainly base oil (80-90% of the lubricant) remaining with additives. Oxidation stability of the lubricant oil plays a critical role in the performance of vehicle. High temperature exposure of lubricant oil during vehicle operation leads increased viscosity, sludge formation and bearing corrosion leading to poor fuel economy and shorter oil drain interval. Polnox antioxidants are ideally suited for increasing the thermo-oxidative resistance of lubricant oils to meet today’s need for engine oils, automatic transmission fluids, greases.

Group II oil, which is widely used as a base oil in the lubricant industry, was treated with different antioxidants: one set with Polnox® 7030, and the other with a leading commercial antioxidant from 500 ppm to 3000 ppm. An ASTM D 6186 Method at 180°C was used to compare the two antioxidants’ performance. The comparative plot below suggests that oil treated with 500 ppm of Polnox® 7030 outperforms oil treated with 3000 ppm of commercial antioxidant.
