Plastics and elastomers undergo oxidative degradation as a result of exposure to oxygen in combination with other factors such as heat, irradiation, shear, and mechanical stress.  Degradation results in undesired effects including discoloration, embrittlement, and deterioration of useful properties.  This process ultimately limits the useful service life of products produced from plastics.

Oxidative degradation of plastics can occur during high temperature processing operations (for example injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, rotational molding) as well as during storage and end-use, especially at elevated temperatures.  Antioxidants are added to polymers to protect them from degradation.  However, high processing and end-use temperatures and harsh environmental conditions place serious demands on antioxidant performance, and it can be difficult to meet application-specific performance requirements with existing commercial antioxidants.

Recognizing the deficiencies in today's antioxidants, Polnox’s proprietary DT-mPM platform provides new antioxidants to help plastics achieve superior oxidative stability in demanding applications such as wire & cable, geo-membranes, and others.
